Supreme Court Delays Hearing in Tarun Tejpal Case Until November 5
The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing on Tarun Tejpals appeal against his sentence to November 5, 2026, amid government opposition.

New Delhi, November 3 (Daily Kiran) : The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing on the appeal filed by Tarun Tejpal, the former editor of Tehelka magazine, challenging his conviction in a sexual assault case involving a junior colleague. The next session is now scheduled for November 5, 2026.
During the proceedings, Tejpal’s lawyer, Kapil Sibal, requested that his client be allowed to return home for Diwali. This request faced opposition from the Goa government.
On August 25, the Supreme Court ordered Tejpal to surrender within three weeks. This ruling followed a decision by the Bombay High Court‘s Goa bench on August 6, which overturned a lower court’s acquittal in a 2013 incident that occurred in a hotel lift. The High Court found Tejpal guilty and sentenced him to ten years of rigorous imprisonment.
Previously, on October 15, the Supreme Court had postponed the hearing to November 3 at the request of the Goa government, which indicated that it had submitted its response to Tejpal’s appeal.
On September 25, the Supreme Court issued a notice regarding Tejpal’s challenge to his sentence, which he filed against the ten-year term handed down by the Bombay High Court. The court sought a response from the Goa government in relation to this appeal. Sibal informed the court that Tejpal had surrendered following the Supreme Court’s order, prompting the court to announce that it would set a date for the next hearing soon.
Tejpal surrendered to a Goa court on September 14 and was subsequently taken to Colvale Central Jail in North Goa, shortly after the High Court’s sentencing.
