New Delhi: The Supreme Court has concluded the hearing on the petition related to the parliamentary proceedings for removing Justice Yashwant Verma, who is embroiled in the ‘cash scandal’ case. The court has now reserved its judgment. On Monday, the Supreme Court directed both parties to submit written responses.
Justice Verma had also requested an extension to appear before the three-member committee formed by the Lok Sabha Speaker. However, the Supreme Court rejected this plea, mandating that he must present himself before the committee on the scheduled date of 12 January to present his case.
In his petition, Justice Verma challenged the constitution of the three-member committee by the Lok Sabha Speaker. He argued that, under the Judges Inquiry Act, the removal process of a judge can proceed only after both Houses of Parliament—Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha—approve the proposal, following which a joint committee is to be formed. In this instance, only the Lok Sabha has passed the proposal, while it remains pending in the Rajya Sabha. Therefore, the formation of the committee solely by the Lok Sabha Speaker is not legally valid.
Justice Verma further stated that when the proposal against him was presented on 21 July, a joint committee of both Houses should have been constituted to carry out further investigation. The formation of a committee only by the Lok Sabha indicates procedural irregularity.
It may be recalled that a fire broke out on the night of 14-15 March 2025 at Justice Verma’s government bungalow in Delhi. During firefighting efforts, fire services recovered bundles of burnt currency notes from the storeroom, videos of which went viral. Justice Verma was not present at the bungalow at the time, and his wife informed the police and fire brigade. The recovered cash was reported as unaccounted.
One week after the incident, Justice Verma was transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court, where he has not been assigned any judicial duties so far.
