New Delhi, December 2: The Supreme Court has raised an important question with the Election Commission regarding the ongoing controversy over the Special Electoral Roll (SER) in Kerala. The apex court has asked whether the form submission deadline can be extended by one more week considering the local body elections.
During the hearing, the bench led by Chief Justice Suryakant observed that the government machinery has no issues, but some political parties are raising objections. In such circumstances, the Election Commission should consider their concerns.
The Election Commission informed the court during the hearing that a completely separate team has been deployed for the SER process. Around 25,000 employees are exclusively working on the SER process while separate staff is handling the local body elections.
The Election Commission stated that the original deadline for filling enumeration forms was December 4, which has already been extended to December 11.
Following this, the Supreme Court asked that when the deadline can be extended, whether it can be further extended by another week considering the local elections.
The court directed that whichever political parties in Kerala are demanding an extension of the date should submit their applications to the Election Commission by Wednesday. The court also instructed the Election Commission to decide on these applications within two days and clarify its position.
Earlier on November 26, the Supreme Court had sought responses from the Election Commission on petitions challenging the SER process in several states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh. These petitions were filed by leaders, workers, and various NGOs.
The Supreme Court has made it clear that this matter is related to the smooth conduct of both elections and the SER process. The Election Commission’s report and its decision will now determine whether the SER deadline gets extended once again or not.
