Sunil Gavaskar Urges Rohit Sharma to Retire with More Centuries than His Age

New Delhi, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar recently shared his thoughts on Rohit Sharma’s performance in the third ODI against the West Indies, where Rohit scored 92 runs before being dismissed. Gavaskar expressed disappointment, noting that he hoped Rohit would retire with more ODI centuries than his age.

In an interview with JioStar, Gavaskar stated, “I was disappointed that Rohit got out at 92 because he missed the chance to score a century. He might retire from international cricket after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. Personally, I would like Rohit to have more ODI centuries than his age at that time. If he had scored a century in the third ODI, he would have been closer to achieving that milestone with his 36th century.”

Gavaskar emphasized that a player’s number of centuries exceeding their retirement age reflects the quality and longevity of their career. “In my final year of international cricket, I aimed to have as many Test centuries as my age. I was out in the 90s three times. Had I converted those into centuries, my total would have matched my retirement age of 38,” he added.

He also noted a shift in Rohit’s batting approach. “During the 2023 ODI World Cup, he decided to attack right from the first ball, even with the risk of getting out early. Now, he understands the value of his wicket. He has provided the team with excellent starts, but he is not the type of batsman to settle for just 30 or 40 runs; he is a century-maker. I am pleased to see him score big runs, although he missed a century in this match. He scored one in the previous match and recognizes that his role as a batsman is to score centuries. When he makes big scores, he can achieve centuries in 70-80 balls, which is beneficial for the team in a 50-over game.”

Gavaskar’s insights highlight the expectations surrounding Rohit Sharma as he continues his journey in international cricket.
