Kolkata, March 15: The Election Commission of India has appointed Sumit Gupta, currently serving as the Commissioner of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, as the District Election Officer (DEO) for North Kolkata. This announcement was made by a senior official from the state government on Sunday.
The name of the DEO for North Kolkata was finalized prior to the announcement of the West Bengal Assembly election schedule.
Sumit Gupta, an IAS officer, will oversee the duties of the District Election Officer during the upcoming elections, as per the Election Commission’s decision.
Typically, the Election Commission appoints the District Magistrate of the relevant district as the DEO. However, in Kolkata, the rules differ. Since there is no District Magistrate in Kolkata, this responsibility is usually assigned to an IAS officer from a specific government department. Previously, this duty was not assigned to any designated officer, but now this arrangement has been formalized.
The Election Commission has directly appointed the Commissioner of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation as the election officer for North Kolkata.
Sources indicate that the Election Commission may announce the dates for the Assembly elections today. Prior to this, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar led a full commission meeting to review election preparations, holding discussions with both administrative and police officials, as well as meetings with recognized political parties in the state.
According to Election Commission sources, the elections in West Bengal may occur in two to three phases. A press conference is expected to be held around 4 PM today in the national capital to make this announcement.
However, even before the formal election notification is issued, the Election Commission has finalized the appointment of the District Election Officer for North Kolkata.
