Ambikapur, July 19: The Surguja police have announced stringent measures against landlords who fail to conduct police verification of their tenants. It is now mandatory for landlords to provide information about every tenant residing in their property to the local police station. Under the directives of DIG and SSP Rajesh Agrawal, the police department has intensified its campaign to raise awareness among citizens about the importance of tenant verification.
The police explained that criminals often disguise themselves as tenants after committing crimes in other cities or states. Some antisocial elements rent homes to plan criminal activities. In such cases, if landlords do not have the tenant’s photo, mobile number, and permanent address, it complicates police investigations and delays apprehending criminals.
Surguja police have made digital tenant verification extremely easy. Citizens can now verify their tenants online from the comfort of their homes using the Chhattisgarh Police’s ‘Samadhan App’ or ‘Citizen Service Portal.’ Additionally, landlords can opt for offline verification by visiting the relevant police station.
For digital verification, landlords must provide proof of address, ownership documents, and identification. Tenants, on the other hand, need to submit identification proof, permanent address, passport-sized photo, employment details, and the rental agreement. After registering on the app or portal, landlords should navigate to ‘Citizen Service’ and select the ‘Tenant Verification’ option. They must then fill in the necessary details of the landlord, tenant, and two local witnesses, along with uploading required documents.
According to the police, tenant verification helps identify antisocial elements. During verification, the tenant’s criminal record is checked, and physical verification may be conducted if necessary. Maintaining a record of tenants is crucial for police during emergencies, disputes, or criminal investigations.
Surguja police reported that an FIR was filed against a landlord in the Gandhinagar police station area for failing to verify tenants. The investigation revealed that Rahul Vishwakarma had rented his property to several individuals without notifying the police as required by law.
These tenants were involved in a serious armed robbery in the Gandhinagar area on the night of May 13. The landlord was found to have violated the district magistrate’s orders, leading to charges under Section 223 of the Indian Penal Code, resulting in the arrest of the accused.
The Surguja police urge citizens to ensure mandatory verification of their tenants.
