Agartala, February 28: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and responsibility in a thriving democracy. Speaking at a seminar focused on the duties of elected representatives towards all sections of society, he stated that accountability is one of the fundamental pillars of democracy.
He highlighted that protecting the dignity of the people, maintaining personal decorum, standing by citizens during difficult times, and ensuring complete accountability in work are hallmarks of a true representative.
The seminar, organized by the Tripura Assembly, was described by the Chief Minister as a historic milestone in efforts to make democracy more transparent, robust, and people-centric. He asserted that winning the public’s trust and respect is the greatest commitment of an elected representative, stressing that democracy flourishes on the foundations of ethics, transparency, and accountability.
Referring to India as the world’s largest democracy, he noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership, India’s global stature has significantly increased. He further stated that it is the responsibility of every representative to uphold and strengthen this respect.
CM Saha also mentioned that representatives should be accessible to the public year-round, listen to their grievances, and take immediate action. He remarked, “People observe and understand everything. The goal should not only be electoral victory but also ensuring the development of marginalized communities and the welfare of weaker sections.” He emphasized the necessity of honesty, self-assessment, and a corruption-free outlook.
Highlighting the importance of digital connectivity in the era of Digital India, the Chief Minister noted that technology offers a significant opportunity for direct engagement with citizens. He explained that sharing information about development projects and welfare schemes through digital platforms enhances transparency and strengthens public trust. He also discussed the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s (CPA) operational methods and the need for representatives to fulfill their accountable roles in their respective constituencies.
Tripura Governor Indra Sen Reddy Nallu stated that the Constitution of the country is not merely a legal document but a guiding force that ensures justice, equality, and freedom for every citizen. Addressing the seminar at Pragya Bhavan, the Governor emphasized that the primary duty of elected representatives is to serve the people. He asserted that accountability is not just a topic for discussion but a fundamental pillar of a functioning democracy.
He added, “Our goal is to ensure that every citizen receives their constitutional right to justice. We must strive to empower farmers, tribal communities, women, and youth.” Reddy Nallu remarked that although representatives are elected from specific constituencies, their responsibilities extend to the entire state and its populace.
