In a major development, Steve Smith will captain the side as regular skipper Pat Cummins has been ruled out due to injury. The selectors have also made a surprise inclusion — Jake Weatherald, who has been named in the Test squad for the first time.
According to the announcement, Cummins’ unavailability for the opening match was already expected, and Smith will take charge for the series opener. The Australian selectors have introduced several key changes, including the return of Marnus Labuschagne, who earned his place back after an impressive run in domestic cricket.
At the same time, Sam Konstas has been dropped following a string of underwhelming performances, with the selectors opting to back more experienced and in-form players ahead of the high-pressure Ashes series.
