Sydney, November 4 (Daily Kiran): Cricket Australia has announced the squad for the first Test of the Ashes series against England, starting on November 21. In a major development, Steve Smith will captain the side as regular skipper Pat Cummins has been ruled out due to injury. The selectors have also made a surprise inclusion — Jake Weatherald, who has been named in the Test squad for the first time.

According to the announcement, Cummins’ unavailability for the opening match was already expected, and Smith will take charge for the series opener. The Australian selectors have introduced several key changes, including the return of Marnus Labuschagne, who earned his place back after an impressive run in domestic cricket.

At the same time, Sam Konstas has been dropped following a string of underwhelming performances, with the selectors opting to back more experienced and in-form players ahead of the high-pressure Ashes series.

Making headlines is Jake Weatherald’s selection, marking his maiden Test call-up. The left-handed opener, with over 5,000 runs in 76 first-class matches, is now in line to make his Test debut in Brisbane. If Labuschagne does not open, Weatherald is likely to partner Usman Khawaja at the top of the order.

In the bowling department, with Cummins unavailable, Australia will rely on the experienced pace trio of Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, and Scott Boland, supported by off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Chief Selector George Bailey confirmed that 14 of the 15 players named are also participating in the upcoming Sheffield Shield matches, ensuring adequate red-ball preparation ahead of the high-stakes series. He also hinted that Cummins is expected to return for the second Test, starting December 4 at the Gabba.

Australia Squad for First Ashes Test:

Steve Smith (Captain), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster.

The five-match Ashes series promises to be an exciting contest between traditional rivals, with Australia looking to defend the urn under interim captaincy and England aiming for redemption after their previous defeat.
