Sri Lanka: Campaigning for Presidential elections ends

Polling will be held on Saturday. Sri Lanka People’s party (SLPP) contender Gotabaya Rajapaksa expressed confidence of his election victory and  urged his supporters to be respectful when celebrating the victory once the results are officially declared. Mr. Rajpaksa said they expect to establish a quality and efficient government and request the people to celebrate the victory in a dignified manner without inconveniencing others. New Democratic Front’s candidate Sajith Premadasa said  he is  an original Sri Lankan and citizenship issues are not his concern. Mr. Premadasa said no one else can match his energy, abilities, talent and creativity adding the real hero of the majority of the country is none other than Sajith Premadasa.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa has said the incumbent government failed to resolve its internal issues owing to the lack of understanding between President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The former President and brother of Gotabaya said the future SLPP government will not suffer the ills of the current government due to the sibling bond shared with SLPP Presidential Candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The former President is aspiring to be Prime minister if Gotabaya wins the Presidency.
