SRH Claims Top Spot in IPL 2026 After Defeating PBKS by 33 Runs

Hyderabad, May 7: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has ascended to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 points table. The team secured a 33-run victory against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 49th match of the season on Wednesday.

With 7 wins out of 11 matches, SRH jumped two spots to claim the top position. Meanwhile, PBKS fell to second place after suffering their third consecutive loss, having won 6 out of 10 matches.

Batting first after losing the toss at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, SRH posted a formidable total of 235 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. The opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head contributed 54 runs in just 21 balls. Abhishek scored 35 runs off 13 balls before departing.

Travis Head then partnered with Ishan Kishan for the second wicket, adding 30 runs. Head scored 38 runs off 19 balls, hitting 3 sixes and 3 fours.

SRH lost both openers by the time they reached 84 runs. Ishan Kishan then joined forces with Heinrich Klaasen, forming a crucial partnership of 88 runs off 48 balls for the third wicket, putting the team in a strong position. Ishan scored 55 runs off 32 balls, featuring 4 sixes and 2 fours.

Nitish Reddy teamed up with Heinrich Klaasen for the fourth wicket, adding 63 runs in just 32 balls, propelling the team to a massive score. Klaasen scored 69 runs off 43 balls, including 4 sixes and 3 fours, while Nitish remained unbeaten with 29 runs off 13 balls, hitting 4 boundaries. For PBKS, Arshdeep Singh, Lockie Ferguson, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Vijaykumar Vaishak each took one wicket.

In response, PBKS managed only 202 runs, losing 7 wickets in their allotted overs. The team had a disastrous start, losing both openers for just 4 runs within 1.1 overs.

Cooper Connolly took charge after the early setbacks. He added 19 runs with captain Shreyas Iyer (5) for the third wicket and formed a 40-run partnership with Marcus Stoinis (28) in 20 balls. The team lost its fourth wicket at a score of 63, but Connolly attempted to stabilize the innings by adding 47 runs with Suryansh Shedge for the fifth wicket in 30 balls. Suryansh scored 25 runs off 17 balls.

Connolly completed his maiden IPL century in the 19.4 over but could not lead his team to victory. He remained not out at 107 runs off 59 balls, hitting 8 sixes and 7 fours. For the opposition, Shivang Kumar and Pat Cummins each took 2 wickets, while Nitish Reddy, Ishan Malinga, and Shakib Hasan claimed 1 wicket each.
