
New Delhi, February 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Spanish President Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday in New Delhi to discuss bilateral issues. The leaders focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, economy, health, digital technology, innovation, and several other vital sectors. Following the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction, stating that the discussions were fruitful.
President Sanchez arrived in New Delhi to participate in the AI Impact Summit 2026, a global platform that emphasizes the role of artificial intelligence in industry and governance.
Before attending the summit, Sanchez held a significant meeting with PM Modi. The Prime Minister shared details of their discussion on the social media platform X. He wrote, “Had a productive meeting with President Pedro Sanchez in Delhi. We discussed ways to enhance India-Spain friendship, particularly in defense, security, technology, and other areas. Our countries are celebrating 2026 as the India-Spain Year of Culture, Tourism, and AI, which will deepen connections between our peoples. It was also encouraging to see a large delegation from a Spanish university visiting India, which will greatly aid in connecting our people.”
PM Modi further noted, “The historic FTA with the EU will have a positive impact on our economic partnership with Spain, creating new opportunities for our citizens.”
Following the bilateral talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared details on X, stating, “PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Spanish President Pedro Sanchez, who is in India for the AI Impact Summit 2026. Both leaders discussed various issues aimed at deepening the India-Spain partnership.”
Before his meeting with the Prime Minister, President Sanchez participated in the Spain-India CEO Forum, where he emphasized investment opportunities in Spain and sought to strengthen business relations with prominent Indian entrepreneurs.
In a post on X, President Sanchez remarked, “Spain is a country worth investing in. It is a strategic partner that offers growth, stability, talent, and innovation. This is what I conveyed to senior executives of Indian companies in New Delhi.”
The discussions between President Sanchez and PM Modi further solidify the longstanding and amicable relations between India and Spain, which have been in place since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1956.
President Sanchez previously visited India on October 28-29, 2024, marking his first trip to the country and the first visit by a Spanish government president to India in 18 years.
