Los Angeles, July 11: Spain has secured its place in the FIFA World Cup semifinals for the first time since 2010 by defeating Belgium 2-1. In the upcoming semifinal, Spain will face France. Ahead of this crucial match, Spain’s young star Lamin Yamal has thrown down the gauntlet to France.
Yamal stated that Spain fears no team and suggested that it is France that should be wary. He emphasized that Spain has triumphed over France in recent high-stakes matches and is entering this game with full confidence. Yamal’s performance against Belgium was exceptional, earning him the title of ‘Player of the Match.’
He remarked that since the tournament began, everyone has been eager to see the clash between Spain and France. “We are very excited about this match. I believe that the two strongest teams in the tournament will face each other,” Yamal said. He made it clear that Spain will not alter its aggressive style of play. The team will continue to focus on maintaining ball control while playing attacking football.
The 18-year-old player acknowledged France’s strength but insisted that Spain will stick to its identity. “We will play the way we always have. We are confident that our style can lead us to victory,” he added. Yamal made a bold statement regarding France, saying, “If any team should be afraid, it is France, because we have beaten them before.”
He recalled last year’s Euro 2024 semifinal, where Spain defeated France 2-1. In that match, a stunning long-range goal from the then 16-year-old Yamal captured global attention. Following that, Spain clinched the final victory, becoming European champions with a winning goal from Dani Olmo.
Yamal believes that the previous victory has boosted the confidence of Spain’s players. He stated that past successes inspire the team to perform better in crucial matches. Although Yamal has scored only one goal in this World Cup so far, he remains unfazed. “The team’s victory is more important than personal records,” he noted. “I scored just one goal in the Euros, but we won the trophy. I’m happy as long as the team keeps winning. The team comes first for me.”
When asked if he hopes to score another memorable goal against France, he smiled and replied, “I hope so. I would definitely like to do that.” The semifinal will also showcase a significant matchup between Yamal and France’s captain Kylian Mbappé, who is in outstanding form this World Cup, having scored eight goals and provided three assists in five matches. He is currently tied with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot race. Meanwhile, Yamal has emerged as one of Spain’s key players with his quick dribbling, excellent passing, and great vision.
However, Yamal stated that the presence of a player like Mbappé will not change Spain’s strategy. “We are not afraid of anyone. We have beaten France in our last two encounters. We are here not just to play in the semifinals but to win the World Cup,” Yamal concluded. He reiterated, “We respect France, but we do not fear them. I believe that the two best teams in the world are facing off, and if anyone should be afraid, it is France.”
