South Koreas First Lady Encourages Adopted Koreans to Connect with Their Heritage

South Koreas First Lady hopes adopted Koreans will cherish memories of their homeland during a recent conference in Seoul.

Seoul, October 19 (Daily Kiran) : South Korea’s First Lady, Kim Hae-kyung, expressed her hope that adopted Koreans living abroad will reconnect with their homeland and cherish fond memories during a speech at the International Korean Adoptee Association (IKAA) conference in Seoul on Monday.

The event brought together adopted Koreans from around the world, providing them an opportunity to connect and build a community. Kim emphasized that each attendee would perceive South Korea through a unique lens. For some, it may feel foreign, while for others, it may represent a long-awaited homeland.

She acknowledged that many attendees might come with questions about their roots and identity. Kim encouraged them to immerse themselves in South Korea’s autumn beauty, cuisine, and cultural attractions, hoping they would forge new, meaningful relationships during their visit.

“I wish for the atmosphere, charm, and beauty of our homeland to remain in your memories for a long time,” Kim said, expressing her desire for the attendees to strengthen their ties to South Korea.

IKAA President Tommy Gentzel highlighted the immense potential for deepening connections between adopted Koreans and South Korea. He stressed the importance of understanding the struggles faced by these individuals and called for steps toward reconciliation.

Gentzel urged South Korea and relevant organizations to provide necessary resources and support for adopted Koreans seeking to find their biological families, which may include DNA testing.

In related news, South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo announced the government’s commitment to prepare the groundwork for resuming dialogue between Seoul and Pyongyang, aiming for peaceful coexistence. Speaking at a sports event for displaced North Korean residents, Han emphasized the need to open channels for discussions on peace and shared prosperity, acknowledging the ongoing pain of displaced families due to the division of the Koreas.

“Our efforts to pave the way for peaceful coexistence between South and North Korea must not cease,” the Prime Minister stated.
