Seoul, May 4: South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has firmly rejected allegations made against him by the previous administration, emphasizing the need for public opinion and careful deliberation. A senior official from the presidential office made this statement on Monday. The ruling Democratic Party (DP) has called for an investigation into these allegations, which are reportedly based on fabricated evidence from the former government.
According to a report by the Yonhap News Agency, Hong Ihk-pyo, the senior secretary for political affairs to the president, addressed this during a press briefing, citing the president’s remarks. Last week, the DP introduced a bill proposing an investigation by a special counsel.
The bill demands an independent inquiry. Lee’s party claims that during the administration of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, charges against Lee were based on fabricated evidence related to several cases, including a real estate development scandal.
Since taking office in June last year, Lee has faced multiple allegations, which have since been suspended or postponed indefinitely.
Before becoming president, Lee Jae-myung was embroiled in various legal challenges, but proceedings were halted or postponed after he assumed office in June last year.
Under the proposed bill, a special counsel will take over the prosecution of these cases and decide whether to proceed. The president will have the authority to appoint the special counsel from three suggested candidates.
Opposition lawmakers argue that this bill could provide the special counsel with the basis to dismiss cases against Lee, suggesting it may be an attempt to exonerate him from the allegations.
On Monday, Hong stated that the president has urged the DP to make decisions regarding the timing and process of this bill based on “public opinion and careful deliberation.”
Hong described the proposed special investigation as “essential,” noting that parliamentary inquiries have revealed signs of “illegal and improper investigations” during Yoon’s term.
He also mentioned that there is growing public understanding of the necessity for this special investigation.
