
Kolkata, March 4: The South African pair of Marco Jansen and Tristan Stubbs made headlines during the T20 World Cup against New Zealand. They formed a remarkable sixth-wicket partnership, scoring 73 runs off just 47 balls. This achievement marks the second-largest partnership for the sixth wicket or lower in T20 World Cup playoff history.
The partnership blossomed at Eden Gardens during the first semifinal of the 2026 T20 World Cup. South Africa found themselves in a precarious position, having lost five wickets for just 77 runs. However, Jansen and Stubbs steadied the innings, guiding the score to 150 before Jansen took charge, pushing the total to 169/8.
This partnership also stands as the largest sixth-wicket or lower partnership for South Africa in T20 cricket history.
The record for the largest sixth-wicket partnership in T20 World Cup playoffs is held by Australian players Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade, who put together an unbeaten 81-run stand against Pakistan in Dubai in 2021.
In the 2009 T20 World Cup final, Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews and Kumar Sangakkara formed a crucial unbeaten partnership of 68 runs against Pakistan at Lord’s, placing them third on the list.
Fourth on the list are Australia’s George Bailey and Pat Cummins, who had a 54-run unbeaten partnership against England in the 2016 final. Additionally, Michael Hussey and Mitchell Johnson contributed a 53-run unbeaten partnership for Australia against Pakistan in the 2010 semifinals.
Batting first after losing the toss, South Africa posted a total of 169 runs, losing 8 wickets. Marco Jansen scored an impressive 55 runs off 30 balls, hitting 5 sixes and 2 fours, while Stubbs contributed 29 runs from 24 balls. Dewald Brevis also added 34 runs to the team’s total.
From the opposing side, Matt Henry, Cole McConchie, and Rachin Ravindra each took 2 wickets, while Lockie Ferguson and James Neesham claimed 1 wicket each. The winning team will advance to the final on March 8.
