Solar Pump Initiative Transforms Farming in Bundelkhand, Madhya Pradesh

Damoh, May 6: In the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh, timely irrigation has always posed a significant challenge for farmers. However, the Prime Minister’s Solar Pump House Scheme has emerged as a major relief for them.

Farmers like Pancham Singh Lodhi and Munna Yadav from the small village of Bitli in the Tendukheda block of Damoh district have become strong examples of self-reliant farming. Once troubled by erratic electricity supply and rising diesel pump costs, Pancham Singh views this scheme as nothing short of a blessing.

In a conversation, Pancham Singh shared that limited land and dependence on irrigation led to numerous challenges. Frequent power cuts forced him to wake up at 2 AM to irrigate his fields. If he missed the timing, the electricity would go out, and his crops would begin to wilt. Additionally, the increasing cost of diesel pumps made farming increasingly unprofitable.

His situation changed dramatically when he learned about the Prime Minister’s Solar Pump House Scheme. He applied immediately and received a solar pump with nearly 90% subsidy. He only had to invest about 20,000 to 30,000 rupees, covering just 10% of the total cost. This installation brought a significant transformation to his farming practices. Now, he enjoys free and uninterrupted irrigation throughout the day, leading to increased crop productivity and substantial cost reductions.

Since installing the solar pump, Pancham Singh’s income has improved. The expenses for diesel and electricity have nearly vanished, and timely irrigation is expected to boost crop yields. This has strengthened his financial situation, making farming more profitable than ever before.

Another farmer from the same village, Munna Yadav, also highlighted the benefits of the scheme. He used to pay around 10,000 rupees monthly for electricity, but now, thanks to the solar pump, that expense has completely disappeared. He mentioned that not only has he benefited personally, but he is also raising awareness about the scheme among neighboring farmers.

Initiatives like the solar pump scheme play a crucial role in making farmers self-reliant. Timely government assistance like this not only simplifies farming but can also develop it into a profitable business.
