Srinagar, April 21 : Upper reaches of Kashmir valley received a fresh spell of snowfall while the plains were lashed by rains resulting in a considerable drop in temperature. The Meteorological department has forecast cloudy sky with occasional rains, thunderstorm and gusty winds on Thursday, officials said. MeT forecast of freaky weather, cloudy with occasional rain, thunderstorm with gusty winds and hail storm at isolated places and snowfall over higher reaches is likely to continue till Friday at most places of Kashmir and scattered places of Jammu. Jammu region is expected to see a respite from the heat from Friday afternoon onwards. Upper reaches of Kashmir valley including the ski resort of Gulmarg and Machil, Gurez in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district received a fresh spell of snowfall, reports said. Reports of hail storm were also received from parts of south Kashmir. Srinagar and its adjoining areas were lashed by rains resulting in considerable drop in temperature. Tourists on the Boulevard road near the banks of Dal Lake were seen wearing warm clothes and headgear to escape the cold. Srinagar received 6.9 mm of rain during the past 24 hours till 0830 hours and recorded a low of 10.0 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature was 19.7 degree Celsius against the 21.1 degree Celsius which was 1.4 degree Celsius below normal on Thursday. Gulmarg in north Kashmir received the highest rainfall of 24.8 mm of rain and recorded a low of 2.0 degree Celsius against 2.5 degree Celsius on the previous night. It also received a light snowfall on Thursday, reports said. Tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir, had 0.1 mm of rain and recorded a low of 8.6 degree Celsius, Qazigund received 7.2 mm of rain during the period and recorded a low of 8.2 degree, Kokernag received 0.4 mm of rain and recorded a low of 8.0 degree Celsius while Kupwara in north Kashmir received 17.8 mm of rain and recorded a low of 8.4 degree Celsius, the MeT office said.
