
Srinagar is witnessing sub-zero night temperatures across Kashmir, with Gulmarg recording a minimum of minus 9 degrees Celsius. Srinagar’s temperature dropped to minus 0.6 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam recorded minus 4.5 degrees. Jammu city reported 7.2 degrees Celsius, Katra 6.4, Batote 0.9, Banihal minus 2.6, and Doda’s Bhaderwah minus 3.4 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department has forecast mainly dry weather with cloudy skies until the evening of January 31. From February 1 and 2, there is a likelihood of light to moderate rain and snowfall in some areas. Between February 3 and 6, the weather is expected to remain dry.
Authorities from Ganderbal, Bandipora, and Kupwara districts have issued avalanche warnings for high-altitude areas and advised residents to exercise extreme caution. This advisory follows an avalanche incident in Sonamarg on Tuesday, which fortunately caused no casualties or damage. Police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were promptly deployed to assess the situation.
The Ganderbal Police stated that the risk of avalanches remains high due to the prevailing weather conditions. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was reopened for traffic from both directions on Wednesday, with officials urging commuters to maintain lane discipline to avoid congestion.
However, heavy snowfall has kept the Srinagar-Leh route via Zoji La pass and the Mughal Road closed. Additionally, the Sinthan Pass connecting Anantnag to Kishtwar district and Razdan Pass linking Bandipora’s Gurez Valley remain shut.
