Srinagar is currently facing major disruptions due to fresh snowfall that blanketed the Kashmir Valley on Friday. Continuous snowfall and adverse weather have severely affected both air and road transportation in the region.
Normal life in Srinagar and surrounding areas has been thrown into disarray, accompanied by a sharp drop in temperatures. The inclement weather has badly impacted flight operations at Srinagar International Airport. Authorities warn that if the snowfall continues, flight services could remain suspended for several days.
Flight Operations Halted Due to Snow
Officials report that poor visibility and snow accumulation on the runway have prevented any landings or takeoffs. Airlines have issued warnings to passengers about flight delays and cancellations, urging them to stay in contact with their respective airlines for updates. However, recent reports indicate that the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has cleared snow from the airport runway, allowing gradual resumption of flight operations.
Road Traffic Severely Affected
The road situation remains critical as well. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been temporarily closed near the Navayug Tunnel as a precautionary measure. Additionally, Mughal Road and Sinthan Road are closed at multiple points due to heavy snow deposits. Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police have halted vehicles at safe locations to prevent accidents caused by slippery roads. Reopening of roads will depend on weather improvement and snow clearance.
Challenges for Travellers and Safety Advisory
Passengers are facing significant difficulties as ongoing road and air service suspensions lead to travel disruptions. Many travellers have reported a steep increase in airfares due to limited flight availability, compounding their hardships. The Meteorological Department has forecast continued heavy snowfall in Srinagar and nearby areas. Given the current conditions, normalisation of traffic could take longer than expected. Authorities have appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary travel and to follow all weather-related safety guidelines.
