
Ahmedabad, April 4: The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested six individuals for allegedly running an online cricket betting racket from an apartment near the Memnagar area. The suspects were reportedly placing bets using multiple online betting IDs during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Friday night.
Acting on a tip-off, police raided an apartment in Anand Park Society around 11 PM, which was specifically rented for gambling activities.
The arrested individuals include Kapil alias Chirag Thakkar (24), Abhay Thakkar (30), Yashkumar Akhani (30), Meet Jaiswal (25), Kalpesh Thakkar (35), and Dhruv Thakkar (27), all originally from Banaskantha district.
Authorities revealed that the suspects were not only placing bets themselves but were also selling betting IDs to others. A total of ₹3,10,110 worth of items were seized, including 16 mobile phones valued at ₹2,60,000 and ₹50,110 in cash.
Some suspects operated on a commission basis, while others placed bets in real-time on various platforms. Police are investigating additional individuals who are still at large, including Raunak Thakkar from Patan and Deep Thakkar from Ahmedabad, who are accused of supplying betting IDs.
Clients linked to this racket include Akash Lalwani from Ahmedabad, Kishan Thakkar from Gandhinagar, Jitu from Ahmedabad, and Jamak from Bhabhar. A case has been registered under the Gambling Act, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and dismantle the entire network. Previously, the city’s Crime Branch had taken action in several cricket-related cases involving online ticketing.
