Mumbai, February 21: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to probe the fake marksheet and degree scandal in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
The 14-member team will be led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Yogesh Kumar. The team is set to visit Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University (CSJMU) for an in-depth investigation, where they will interrogate officials and staff.
The scandal came to light when the Kidwai Nagar police raided a coaching center called ‘Shail Group of Education.’ Four individuals were arrested, and over 900 counterfeit degrees, marksheets, migration certificates, and other documents were seized. Notably, 357 of these fake documents were attributed to Kanpur University (CSJMU).
Authorities also discovered a forged seal of the CSJMU’s Deputy Registrar in the possession of the suspects. The gang operated across nine states, charging between ₹50,000 to ₹75,000 for high school and intermediate certificates, and ₹1.5 to ₹2.5 lakh for degrees in B.Tech, LLB, and pharmacy.
Members of the gang collaborated with certain university staff to create fake entries in online records, making the documents appear legitimate during verification. The police have also uncovered post-dated checks and evidence of assets worth millions. Several lawyers have been implicated for obtaining fake LLB degrees.
Just a day prior, the registrar and examination controller of CSJMU stated that no fraud had occurred on the university’s part and that there had been no contact with the police. However, the documents seized raise suspicions of collusion involving university seals and records. Many officials and staff members may come under scrutiny during the investigation.
The SIT will now conduct document verification on campus, question staff, and delve deeper into potential collusion. Police have stated that the search for other gang members is ongoing, and the case will be pursued rigorously.
