Mumbai, June 16: Shiv Sena (UBT) asserted on Tuesday that India’s democratic and political framework is facing a troubling “decline,” marked by orchestrated defections, alleged destruction of electronic voting machines (EVMs), institutional silence, and distractions aimed at the public. These events indicate a shift towards authoritarianism.
In an editorial published in the party’s mouthpiece, ‘Saamana,’ Shiv Sena (UBT) highlighted that news of defecting legislators and MPs has dominated Indian television channels and newspapers. While there was no discussion on the burning of four thousand EVMs, a single MP’s absence from a Shiv Sena meeting became a sensational national topic. This mirrors tactics used by authoritarian governments worldwide, where new controversies are created daily to divert public attention from fundamental issues.
The party accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of becoming a “market of rumors.” They claimed that the rumors emerging from this market are labeled as development. Recently, the BJP spread the rumor that “Prime Minister Modi is the longest-serving Prime Minister.” However, they remained silent on the undeniable truth regarding the embezzlement of five crore rupees from the Ayodhya Ram Temple.
The party stated, “Prime Minister Modi could not even express sorrow over the deaths of three Indian sailors killed in a U.S. attack. Instead, he embarked on a trip to France while the bodies of those sailors decayed at a port in Oman. This disrespect towards Indian citizens’ remains is deeply concerning.”
The editorial argued that while these tragic events unfold, the BJP continues its relentless campaign to poach legislators and MPs from other political parties. The BJP appears determined to erase the Trinamool Congress (TMC), founded by Mamata Banerjee. As a result, TMC legislators and MPs are leaving the party daily.
Uddhav Thackeray‘s faction of Shiv Sena alleged that the ruling government shows no signs of halting its arrogant attacks on opposition parties. The party commented, “The BJP and its allies boast that they have broken the TMC, and now they will also break Shiv Sena. They call it ‘Operation Tiger.'”
The editorial stated that under the BJP’s rule, the Speakers of the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies are effectively disregarding the Tenth Schedule. Leaders switching parties openly approach the Speaker, saying, “We have separated, grant us recognition,” and the Speaker seems to be complicit in these illegal actions. Even the Election Commission and Supreme Court appear to act as protectors of traitors.
Thackeray’s faction claimed that the BJP aims to impose a single-party rule in the country. Their true objective is to dismantle democracy, alter the Constitution, and implement a dictatorial presidential system.
They stated, “Their goal is to eliminate regional parties in the states and destroy the country’s diverse political culture, a process that has already begun. This implies that future elections may not occur, and the president will appoint their cabinet directly. The country is rapidly moving towards this system of governance.”
The Thackeray faction emphasized, “The government maintains a calculated silence on serious national crises, such as rampant inflation, exam paper leaks, rising unemployment, the depreciating rupee, and atrocities against women, while orchestrated political defections dominate the political landscape in the name of ‘development.'”
