New Delhi, June 5: The debate surrounding the captaincy of India’s T20 cricket team is heating up. Reports indicate that selectors are considering appointing a new player to lead the T20 squad, replacing current captain Suryakumar Yadav. Former player and selector Devang Gandhi believes that Shreyas Iyer is leading the race for the captaincy.
In an interview, Gandhi emphasized Iyer’s experience in leadership roles. He stated, “I think there are still two years until the Olympics. Are the selectors looking at him two years down the line? That is the big question. The competition is tough. Everyone needs to perform well, and many players are doing just that. Shreyas has been consistently impressive. Rajat Patidar is also showcasing strong performances. His captaincy has been outstanding over the past two years. I believe Suryakumar’s batting form is a concern, and in my opinion, it’s time to move on from him.”
Gandhi further elaborated, “You always want a captain with experience, whether it’s in international cricket or the IPL. I think Shreyas is leading the race for T20 captaincy, given how he has been leading Punjab Kings and previously made Kolkata Knight Riders champions. If he gets the opportunity, he certainly deserves it.”
If Shreyas Iyer is appointed captain, Gandhi suggests that either Tilak Varma or Ishan Kishan should be considered for the vice-captain role. He believes Ishan Kishan would be a better option for vice-captaincy, as he has already captained Sunrisers Hyderabad in the initial matches of IPL 2026 and led Jharkhand to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament.
