Shocking Murder of Elderly Sister in Mumbai Leads to Arrest

Mumbai, April 27: A shocking incident has emerged in Mumbai, where a man allegedly murdered his elderly sister due to a family dispute and disposed of her body in a drain in Andheri. Police reported the details on Monday.

The accused, Joseph Thomas Coelho (63), resided with his 80-year-old sister, Blanch Sequeira, in the Marol area of Andheri.

According to police, a heated argument broke out between the siblings on the night of January 10 over family matters. During the altercation, Coelho’s anger escalated, leading him to push his sister out of the house. Sequeira fell and died on the spot due to the impact.

Realizing his sister was dead, Coelho allegedly attempted to conceal the incident by disposing of her body in a municipal drain located within the premises of Mumbai International Airport Limited that same night.

He then fled the scene and later filed a false missing person report at the Andheri police station to mislead the authorities.

The case came to light on April 24 when BMC workers discovered a body while cleaning a drain in Andheri East. Police were promptly notified, and the body was retrieved and sent to Cooper Hospital in Ville Parle West for an autopsy. Due to significant decomposition, initial identification was challenging.

Ultimately, the deceased was identified through her silver bangles and earrings. Police matched these items with a photograph Coelho had previously provided at Sahar police station when he reported his sister missing.

During the investigation, police interrogated neighbors and repeatedly questioned Coelho. He eventually confessed to accidentally killing his sister by pushing her.

Additionally, police have filed a case against Coelho’s wife, Maria, for allegedly attempting to conceal knowledge of the crime. Both have been arrested, and further investigations are ongoing.
