Ranchi, April 6: In a disturbing incident that has shaken Jharkhand, Ranchi police have uncovered the murder of a minor girl, allegedly committed by a man and his son due to “social stigma.”
The accused attempted to erase evidence by secretly transporting the girl’s body to Gaya in Bihar for cremation.
This case emerged during an investigation into the girl’s sudden disappearance from the Ratu police station area. What initially appeared to be a missing person case quickly transformed into a murder investigation, revealing a heinous crime committed within a household.
According to police, the main accused, Subodh Pathak, a resident of Jhakhra Tand in Ratu district, had brought the girl from a poor family about eight years ago and raised her as his own daughter. However, she went missing under suspicious circumstances a few days ago. When neighbors inquired about her whereabouts, the family failed to provide any explanation, causing panic in the community.
Tensions escalated on the night of April 2 when villagers gathered outside the accused’s home, suspecting foul play.
Acting on this information, police launched an investigation and searched the house with a forensic science laboratory (FSL) team, but initially found nothing. An FIR was registered on April 3, and a special investigation team was formed under the direction of the Ranchi SSP. Utilizing technical surveillance and other leads, police focused on Subodh Pathak and his son Rahul Pathak, who were later taken into custody for questioning.
During prolonged interrogation, both confessed to their crime. They revealed that the girl was murdered in their home, and her body was transported to Gaya in a rented ambulance, where it was cremated to destroy evidence.
Police stated that the accused cited fear of public shame as their motive for the murder.
According to their statements, the girl had been in contact with Rahul Pathak’s brother-in-law via Instagram, which later developed into a close relationship. Angered by this, the father and son allegedly conspired to kill her.
Authorities have seized the ambulance used to transport the body. The driver, Pintu Kumar Singh, informed investigators that Subodh Pathak claimed his 13-year-old daughter had died and rented the vehicle for the cremation.
Officials have also recovered two mobile phones from the accused, which are under further investigation.
Ratu police station’s officer-in-charge Adikant Mahto, along with sub-inspectors Mahesh Prasad Kushwaha, Santosh Yadav, and Anuranjan Kumar, played a crucial role in solving this case.
Both accused have been arrested and sent to judicial custody. Police confirmed that further investigations are ongoing to gather additional evidence and fully uncover the sequence of events.
