Mumbai, 28 January – Nineteen years ago on 29 January 2007, Indian actress Shilpa Shetty created a landmark moment for Indian entertainment and the country by winning the UK reality show ‘Big Brother’. Her victory on foreign soil was celebrated as a triumph of perseverance, dignity, and resilience.
Shilpa’s win not only earned her international recognition but also made her a strong voice against racial discrimination. Throughout the show, she faced racial slurs, hostility, and controversies, yet she participated with strength and delivered an outstanding performance. The incidents during the show sparked a nationwide debate on racism in Britain, leading to significant discussions and changes.
The season featured prominent personalities from England and the USA, including Jermaine Jackson, brother of Michael Jackson, and pop singer Ian Watkins. Despite facing discriminatory behaviour from British contestant Jade Goody and her allies, which gained global attention as a case of racism, Shilpa stood firm. The controversy increased the show’s popularity and drew widespread public support for Shilpa, culminating in her winning the final with 67 percent of the public vote.
At 31, Shilpa Shetty received a grand welcome with fireworks and cheers upon returning home. Her victory was not just a personal achievement but a moment of pride for all Indians. She also won a prize of £100,000. When asked about the racial controversy, Shilpa expressed understanding, saying that people make mistakes and that Jade was not racist but had made errors in behaviour.
Shilpa described her experience on the show as incredible and intense. She recalled feeling most upset when she cooked a large meal that went to waste and noted that fellow housemate model Daniel Lloyd later apologised to her. Reflecting on her success, Shilpa said, “This was a wonderful opportunity to make my country proud.”
Following this international acclaim, Shilpa Shetty’s popularity in Bollywood also soared. She went on to feature in several films and gained recognition in fitness, yoga, and business ventures.
