Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Leaves Magh Mela Without Holy Dip, Criticises Government

Prayagraj: The ongoing tension between the administration and Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand has escalated during the Magh Amavasya celebrations in Prayagraj. The Shankaracharya has announced that he will leave the Magh Mela without taking the traditional holy dip at the Sangam.

Speaking to the media, Swami Avimukteshwaranand expressed sharp criticism of the central government and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He accused them of having a double standard, stating, “They talk about Sanatan Dharma on one hand but disrespect Shankaracharyas, children, and Brahmins on the other.”

The Shankaracharya further explained, “If the administration can apologise for their mistake, that would be acceptable. Otherwise, we do not seek anything else from them. What belongs to us must be returned; this is our right, not a charity from you. We peacefully waited for ten days to raise our concerns, but they have been ignored. We gave enough time for reflection, facing injustice, or issuing an apology. Even after 10-11 days, when we decided to leave, the offer presented to us was unacceptable.”

He added, “We rejected the proposal because it came on the day we decided to depart without bathing. Accepting it would mean forgetting the atrocities committed against our faith, us, and our disciples. Our hearts are heavy, but the kind of oppression Brahmins and Shankaracharyas faced during Aurangzeb’s era is now happening under so-called Hindu governments.”

Responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks that governments mistreating saints and neglecting Sanatan adherents cannot be permanent, Avimukteshwaranand said, “On one hand, the Home Minister speaks great wisdom, but on the other, the biggest symbols of Hinduism—Shankaracharyas, Brahmins, children, and sannyasis—are being oppressed. This is the double-faced nature of the government, which the public must be aware of.”
