Mumbai, April 28: In the vibrant world of Hindi cinema, new films are released daily, setting fresh benchmarks at the box office. However, surpassing the classics from the 1990s remains a formidable challenge for contemporary films.
It has become increasingly rare to see Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan share the screen for an extended period. Yet, there was one film that created a sensation after “Karan Arjun,” despite facing significant delays. We are talking about the film “Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam,” released in 2002.
This film featured not only Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan but also Madhuri Dixit in a lead role. Little did anyone know that the production and release of this film would take an astonishing six years. The project began in 1997, but delays arose due to changes in the film’s title and the music composers and singers for various songs. Additionally, several scenes were altered before the release, as the film’s looks and hairstyles were designed with the fashion of 1997 in mind. Some of Madhuri’s looks, in particular, underwent significant changes before the film hit theaters.
The collaboration of these three megastars was crucial for the film’s eventual release. Had it featured different actors, it might never have made it to the big screen. The trio supported each other throughout the shooting and the subsequent changes, leading to the film’s release on May 28, 2002.
Interestingly, Shah Rukh Khan, who played a romantic lead, portrayed a suspicious husband. He candidly expressed to the producer that he found such roles challenging to understand. However, at the insistence of producer K.C. Bokadia, he agreed to participate in the film, refusing to accept even a single rupee as payment.
Initially, Shah Rukh was to receive a fee of 9.5 million rupees, but due to delays in shooting and release, the film’s budget had already escalated. Consequently, Shah Rukh requested the producer not to pay him. K.C. Bokadia later revealed that there is no actor as talented as Shah Rukh. They attempted to compensate him, but he declined.
