Severe Storm Causes Devastation in Assam’s West Machkhuwa, Several Villages Affected
April 24, 2025 Lakhimpur, Assam — A powerful storm accompanied by torrential rain struck West Machkhuwa and surrounding regions of Dhekiajuli Subdivision in Assam late Wednesday night, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The intense weather event caused widespread damage to homes, uprooted trees, and snapped power lines, severely disrupting daily life and connectivity in multiple villages.
Heavy Damage Across Gendhia, Dhenukhana, and Shingia Panchayats
The worst-hit areas include Gendhia, Dhenukhana Batmari, and Shingia Panchayats, where heavy winds flattened rooftops and destroyed household structures. Villagers in Gharmara, Bijoypur, Kathalpara, Nav Madhupur, and Madhupur Bagan also reported significant destruction. Fallen trees blocked roads, and downed power poles have led to a complete power outage in the region.
The storm, which struck during the night, created panic among locals, with many families forced to evacuate or shelter in safer locations amid the chaos.
Roads Blocked, Power Cut, and Emergency Response Delayed
Major roads in the Dhekiajuli Municipal Council area were submerged due to relentless rain, causing waterlogging and travel disruption. In several places, large trees toppled onto roadways, making rescue operations and emergency aid delivery extremely challenging.
The electricity supply has been completely paralyzed, cutting off communication channels and leaving entire villages in darkness. Rescue teams have reportedly begun clearing roads and assessing damage, but progress remains slow due to ongoing weather risks.
Displaced Families and Ongoing Risk
Preliminary reports suggest that dozens of families have been displaced, and local authorities are working to arrange temporary shelter and relief supplies. The disaster highlights the vulnerability of rural regions in Assam to extreme weather events, which are becoming increasingly frequent and intense.
