Severe Heatwave Grips North India, But Relief Likely from April 10 – Check City-Wise Forecast
As North India reels under intense heatwave conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave warnings for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Temperatures in many cities have crossed the 40°C mark, with several regions recording 5-8°C above normal. The good news? Relief is on the horizon starting April 10, thanks to a fresh western disturbance.
Heatwave in Full Force Across North India
The heatwave has intensified across the plains, with the mercury soaring past 40°C in many cities. Delhi recorded 40.2°C on Monday, 5.2°C above normal, and the IMD expects the temperature to climb to 42°C by April 9. Similarly, Punjab has issued a yellow alert, with several districts experiencing day and night temperatures significantly above average.
Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat are also experiencing record-breaking heat, particularly in the regions of Saurashtra and Kutch, where temperatures are seeing unusual spikes.
IMD Predicts Relief from April 10
Starting April 8, a new western disturbance will become active over the western Himalayan region, likely triggering rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across parts of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand on April 10 and 11. This system is expected to lower temperatures by 2-4°C, offering temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave.
The IMD bulletin notes that relatively cooler temperatures are likely to persist until April 13, especially in North India.
