Severe Heatwave Alert Issued for Surguja Region in Chhattisgarh: Mercury Soars Across the State
Raipur, April 22, 2025 The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for Surguja and surrounding regions of Chhattisgarh, forecasting extreme heat conditions over the next four days. With average temperatures already hovering between 43ยฐC to 44ยฐC, residents are advised to take precautions as temperatures may rise further by 1โ2ยฐC in the next 48 hours.
Scorching Days Ahead for Central and Northern Chhattisgarh
Meteorologist H.P. Chandra stated that the rise in temperatures is being driven by the influence of north-westerly winds, western disturbances, and trough formations. The IMD has specifically warned of heatwave conditions in parts of central Chhattisgarh from April 23 to April 25, particularly in Surguja Division.
Over the coming five days, maximum temperatures are likely to remain between 42ยฐC and 44ยฐC, with Raipur currently experiencing the highest temperature in the state. Tuesday is expected to hit 44ยฐC in the capital, while night temperatures are likely to hover around 28ยฐC.
Heatwave Intensity Varies Across Divisions
-
Raipur recorded 43.7ยฐC, the highest temperature in the state on Monday.
-
Bilaspur registered 43.4ยฐC, 2.6ยฐC above the seasonal average.
-
Durg saw temperatures climb to 42.6ยฐC, also higher than normal.
-
Night temperatures remain high, with Bilaspur and Raipur both reporting above-average minimum temperatures.
Light Rain and Thunder in Bastar Division
While northern and central parts reel under the heat, the Bastar Division may experience some respite. The IMD has predicted light showers and thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds for districts like Bastar, Kondagaon, Dantewada, Sukma, and Bijapur. In the last 24 hours, Bhanpuri recorded 20 mm of rainfall and Tokapal received 10 mm.
Atmospheric Factors Behind the Weather Shift
The IMD has pointed to:
-
A Western Disturbance over North Pakistan, extending from 3.1 km to 5.8 km above sea level.
-
A north-south trough line extending from North Chhattisgarh to the Gulf of Mannar, via Telangana and Tamil Nadu at 1.5 km altitude, as contributing to the current climatic instability.
Advisory to the Public
Residents, especially in Surguja, Raipur, Bilaspur, and Durg, are urged to:
-
Avoid outdoor activity during peak hours (12 PM 4 PM).
-
Stay hydrated and wear light, breathable clothing.
-
Check on the elderly and children, who are most vulnerable to heatstroke.
As temperatures continue to climb, Chhattisgarh braces for one of the seasonโs most intense heatwaves. Citizens are encouraged to monitor weather updates and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities and the IMD.
