Chittorgarh, August 11 (H.S.) – Passengers of the Rajasthan Government’s Devasthan Department-sponsored senior citizens’ pilgrimage faced major inconvenience on Monday night after their train failed to arrive on time due to an engine breakdown. The train, which was scheduled to reach Chittorgarh railway station in the evening, had still not arrived even three hours later, leaving 226 pilgrims, departmental staff, and accompanying family members anxious and distressed.

The state government organises the Senior Citizens’ Pilgrimage Programme, and on Monday, the special train was to depart from Ajmer for Rameshwar. The Devasthan Department had already conducted a lottery and informed the selected pilgrims in advance. The department’s team reached Chittorgarh station earlier in the day, setting up a tent near the railway colony for the pilgrims’ accommodation. Buses began bringing pilgrims to the site in the afternoon, where registration, documentation, and ID card distribution were completed by 5 p.m.
According to the schedule, the train was expected to arrive at Chittorgarh railway station around 6 p.m. All pilgrims and their relatives were directed to gather at Platform No. 4 to board the train. As the scheduled time passed without the train’s arrival, Devasthan officials contacted the railway authorities, who informed them that the train’s engine had failed somewhere on the Ajmer railway line. A replacement engine was dispatched from Chittorgarh to bring the train in.
Initially, the arrival was rescheduled for 8 p.m., but even by 9 p.m., the train had not reached Chittorgarh. Concern grew among pilgrims and their families as they waited on Platforms 4 and 5, many elderly passengers looking visibly tired and restless. Family members who had come to see off the pilgrims also stayed on the platform, awaiting further updates.
By late evening, it was indicated that the train might only arrive at 11 p.m., meaning the pilgrims would depart for their destination about five hours later than planned. Sources said that dinner arrangements had been made for the passengers on the train itself, with no separate arrangements available at the platform, adding to the travellers’ discomfort.
