New Delhi, March 16: An inspiring story has emerged about Sanju Samson, a key player in India’s triumph at the T20 World Cup 2026. This narrative highlights the dedication and sacrifices of a professional athlete. Renowned chef Suresh Pillai shared this tale on his Instagram account.
In a crucial quarter-final match against the West Indies, Samson scored an unbeaten 97 runs off 50 balls, propelling India into the semi-finals. This performance solidified his reputation as a batsman capable of leading the team to victory under challenging circumstances. Following the match on March 1, Samson expressed his joy and desire to indulge in his favorite meal after a long time. That night, he requested his manager to arrange a special “cheat meal.”
Chef Suresh Pillai recounted the story in his Instagram post. He revealed that Samson’s manager, Ikhlas, called him, requesting a night of indulgence after three months of strict dieting. Samson craved traditional Kerala dishes such as Puzhukkalari, fish, Kappa, and Chammanthi.
Pillai humorously responded that making Puzhukkalari in Mumbai isn’t easy, but he could arrange for Kanji, Kappa, and fish. He quickly contacted his friend Rasaq Ikka, owner of Society Hotel in Mumbai. Within minutes, Kanji, Kappa, fish curry, fried sardines, Chammanthi, and papad were packed and sent to the St. Regis Hotel, where the Indian team was staying.
In his post, Pillai emphasized that while people often celebrate athletes’ successes, they overlook the hard work and sacrifices behind them. Players like Samson prepare for months with strict diets, limited social media, and relentless practice.
Interestingly, even after that cheat meal, Samson’s remarkable performance continued. He scored 89 runs off 42 balls against England in the semi-finals and another 89 runs off 46 balls against New Zealand in the finals, playing a crucial role in securing India’s championship title. For his outstanding contributions, Samson was named the tournament’s best player.
