Puri, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Internationally acclaimed sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik marked the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami on September 4 by creating a remarkable sand sculpture at Puri Beach in Odisha. The artwork, which features the divine form of Bal Gopal, conveys a heartfelt message of “Happy Janmashtami.”
Standing eight feet tall, the sculpture brings to life the essence of young Krishna, celebrating his rich cultural and spiritual heritage. The piece beautifully depicts Bal Gopal with his beloved flute, a large pot of butter, and a tranquil cow resting beside him, evoking memories of Krishna’s playful childhood stories in Gokul.
Adding a unique touch, Pattnaik adorned the sculpture with 101 small pots of butter, symbolizing devotion and the joyful spirit of Bal Gopal. This masterpiece was created with the help of students from the Sudarsan Sand Art Institute and has drawn significant attention from tourists and locals alike.
In an interview, Pattnaik expressed his hopes for the festival, stating, “On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, I have created a sand representation of Lord Krishna along with 101 butter pots. May Lord Krishna bless everyone with peace, happiness, good health, and prosperity. The divine presence of Bal Gopal fills our lives with love, compassion, positivity, and harmony.”
Pattnaik, a Padma Shri awardee, has represented India in over 65 international sand sculpture championships and festivals, earning recognition worldwide for his artistic excellence. He continues to use sand art as a powerful medium to promote India’s rich cultural heritage and raise awareness about critical social and environmental issues, including climate change, plastic pollution, public health, and global peace.
