Rovman Powell Becomes West Indies New Sixer King, Breaks Nicholas Poorans T20 Record

Kolkata, March 1: The T20 World Cup 2026 saw an exciting clash between Team India and the West Indies. Batting first at Eden Gardens, the Caribbean team scored 195 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their 20 overs. Rovman Powell played a crucial role, scoring an unbeaten 34 runs off just 19 balls in the final overs, hitting 2 sixes and making history.

Rovman Powell has now become the leading six-hitter for the West Indies in T20 cricket. During his innings against India, he surpassed Nicholas Pooran’s record by hitting his 150th six. Pooran previously held the record with 149 sixes in the shortest format of the game.

After losing the toss, the West Indies had a strong start. Captain Shai Hope and Roston Chase put together a solid partnership, adding 68 runs for the first wicket. Hope scored 32 runs off 33 balls before being dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy. Chase, on the other hand, played aggressively, scoring 40 runs off 25 balls with 5 fours and a six.

Shimron Hetmyer contributed 27 runs off 12 balls but failed to convert his good start into a significant innings. Sherfane Rutherford managed only 14 runs from 9 balls. However, after Rutherford’s dismissal, Rovman Powell and Jason Holder took charge, forming a vital partnership of 76 runs for the fifth wicket in just 35 balls. Powell remained unbeaten on 34, while Holder scored 37 runs off 22 balls, including 2 fours and 3 sixes.

In bowling, Jasprit Bumrah was the standout for India, claiming 2 wickets for 36 runs in 4 overs. Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakravarthy each took one wicket, while Arshdeep Singh had a tough outing, conceding 43 runs in his 4 overs.
