Sudden Retirement Shocks Fans and Family
On May 7, 2025, Rohit Sharma surprised the cricketing world by announcing his retirement from Test cricket. Many expected him to lead India in the upcoming Test series against England, but the decision came without warning. While fans struggled to come to terms with the announcement, it was his father’s reaction that struck a deeper emotional chord.
Rohit’s Father: A True Fan of Red-Ball Cricket
At the event in Mumbai, Rohit shared, “My father has always been a die-hard fan of Test cricket. He doesn’t enjoy the fast-paced modern version of the game. For him, Test cricket is the ultimate format.”
Rohit revealed that his father’s admiration for Test cricket often outweighed his appreciation for shorter formats. “When I scored 264 runs in an ODI, my father simply said, ‘Well played, good job,’ and moved on. But if I scored even 30 or 40 runs in a Test match, he would call me and talk about it in detail. That’s the kind of love he has for red-ball cricket.”
Performance Decline Played a Role
Rohit Sharma also addressed the declining results in the format as one of the reasons behind his decision. India had faced Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia recently, with Rohit’s own performance as captain and batsman under the scanner.
“It’s not easy to take such decisions. I have played all levels of red-ball cricket—from school to Under-19, Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and India A. My father followed each step of that journey very closely. He was proud of it. That’s why the decision hit him hard,” Rohit added.
A Nod to Family Sacrifices
Rohit also reflected on the role his father played in supporting his career. “He used to work in a transport company and made many sacrifices for the family. Watching me in whites brought him joy. That’s why it was difficult for him to accept my decision.”
While Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the Indian side in ODIs and possibly in T20Is, his red-ball journey has officially come to a close, marking the end of a significant chapter in Indian cricket.
