
Mumbai, May 10: In a remarkable achievement, Rohit Sharma of the Mumbai Indians has become a joint record holder for the most matches played in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. This milestone was reached during the 54th match of IPL 2026 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
As Rohit took to the field at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, it marked his 278th IPL match, placing him alongside legends MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, who have also played 278 matches. Ravindra Jadeja follows closely with 265 matches, while Dinesh Karthik has played 257 matches. To date, only 12 players have participated in over 200 IPL matches.
Throughout his IPL career, Rohit has amassed 7,289 runs at an average of 30.11, including two centuries. In comparison, Kohli has scored 9,040 runs with eight centuries in the same number of matches, while Dhoni has recorded 5,439 runs at an average of 38.30.
In the match against RCB, Rohit scored 22 runs off 10 balls, hitting two sixes and two fours. Batting first after losing the toss, the Mumbai Indians managed to score 166 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 20 overs.
The team faced early setbacks, losing three wickets for just 28 runs. However, Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma formed a crucial partnership, adding 82 runs for the fourth wicket off 57 balls. Naman scored 47 runs with two sixes and five fours before being dismissed. Tilak Varma contributed significantly with 57 runs off 42 balls, including two sixes and three fours. Raj Bawa and Will Jacks chipped in with 16 and 10 runs, respectively.
On the bowling front, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the standout performer for RCB, claiming four wickets, while Josh Hazlewood, Rasikh Salam Dar, and Romario Shepherd each took one wicket.
