Rising Tensions in Iran Echo Across Gulf, GCC Watches Closely Amid Trump’s Warnings

New Delhi: Iran is currently witnessing significant unrest as public anger mounts against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Citizens, frustrated by rising inflation and unemployment, have taken to the streets in protest, openly opposing the leadership. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has issued stern warnings to the Iranian government, threatening action if authorities respond violently to the demonstrators. These threats have resonated beyond Iran, stirring concerns among Gulf countries and prompting heightened vigilance within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Following the recent US operations in Venezuela, speculation has increased that the US, potentially in coordination with Israel, might launch an offensive against Iran. President Trump’s warnings have amplified these concerns, intensifying regional unease.

In response, the GCC convened ministerial-level meetings to address the unfolding situation. Saudi Arabia also engaged in dialogue with the Iranian government, expressing support for diplomatic engagement. The GCC member states include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman.

The ministerial meetings, though held behind closed doors, resulted in joint statements expressing concern over the developments in Iran. The Gulf countries collectively urged a diplomatic resolution to restore stability. Foreign ministers and senior officials from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other member states have been actively engaging with key international partners to mitigate the risks posed by escalating tensions in Iran.

While no Gulf country has openly endorsed military action, the council has consistently promoted restraint and peaceful dialogue as the preferred approach. Oman, in particular, has supported the issuance of joint statements and ongoing diplomatic efforts. Despite President Trump’s warnings, Gulf states have maintained a cautious stance, closely monitoring Washington’s next moves.
