Mumbai, April 29: The Kapoor family has entertained audiences for four generations and continues to do so today. This illustrious lineage has produced versatile filmmakers and actors, with Rishi Kapoor being renowned not only for his films but also for his candid personality.
In both his personal and public life, Rishi Kapoor was never shy to express his opinions. However, he learned a significant lesson during the filming of his debut movie, “Bobby.” On the set, he faced a daunting challenge, feeling overwhelmed and unsure of himself. Notably, April 30 marks the anniversary of Rishi Kapoor’s passing.
Throughout his career, Rishi Kapoor delivered numerous remarkable romantic films. While actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra dominated the action genre in the 70s and 80s, Rishi Kapoor brought musical and romantic films to the forefront, carving out his unique identity in Hindi cinema. Yet, during the filming of “Bobby,” his father, Raj Kapoor, left him to navigate the challenges of the film industry on his own.
“Bobby” marked Rishi Kapoor’s first role as a lead actor, and working on set was initially daunting for him. Despite coming from a film family, he lacked experience in this environment. He was not allowed to address his father as ‘Dad’ on set; instead, he had to refer to him as ‘Sir.’ When it came time to shoot the film’s first song, Rishi expected a choreographer to be present. However, after waiting for a long time, no one arrived, and Raj Kapoor declared that there would be no choreographer. He instructed Rishi to figure it out himself.
Hearing this left Rishi Kapoor feeling paralyzed. Initially, he resisted the idea, but a piece of advice from Raj Kapoor became a pivotal moment in his life. Raj Kapoor explained that if a choreographer had been called, he would have instructed Rishi to imitate what actors like Dharmendra or Amitabh had done, as he had taught many others. This would lead people to think that Rishi was merely copying them. Therefore, Raj Kapoor encouraged him to be authentic and to perform freely. From that day forward, Rishi Kapoor embraced his unique style in lip-syncing, dancing, and overall presentation in his films, establishing a distinct identity on screen.
