Udaipur, Aug 11 – Residents of Ward No. 12, Chandpole, have raised serious allegations against a private hotel management, claiming encroachment on the land of an ancient Mahadev temple located at Nagar Ghat, along with damage to its idols and obstruction of public worship.

According to locals, Nagar Ghat houses a centuries-old Mahadev temple adjacent to a historic stepwell, traditionally used for bathing and religious activities. In the past, during drought conditions, water from this stepwell was supplied to the public by government departments. The temple premises earlier stood along a public pathway, as per an old land lease document. However, residents allege that Cytex Hotels Pvt. Ltd., reportedly operated by a foreign national, unlawfully extended its property northwards, bringing the temple into private boundaries. On April 9, 2025, Cytex Hotels is said to have sold the land to Schloss Udaipur Private Limited (The Leela Hotel). Locals also claim the land’s ownership remains unclear and warrants investigation.

The dispute escalated on June 8, 2025, when residents allege that the hotel management dismantled the Mahadev temple, removed ancient idols of Lord Shiva’s family, and filled the sanctum containing the self-manifested Shivling. Locals say the incident deeply hurt religious sentiments. The same day, community members reportedly cleared the debris and resumed worship, which continued until the morning of July 4, 2025.

Later that day, residents allege, the hotel erected fencing and installed a tin shed on the temple’s boundary wall, preventing devotees from performing prayers and rituals. The move, they say, has caused widespread resentment in the area.

Residents are demanding that the fencing and tin shed be removed, and access to the temple restored so that the community can continue its traditional worship without hindrance.
