Mumbai, March 3: The Indian women’s cricket team has faced a significant setback. Fast bowler Renuka Thakur will miss the sole Test match against Australia, scheduled at the WACA Stadium in Perth. In her place, Kashvi Gautam has been included in the squad.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement regarding Renuka’s situation, stating, “To better manage her workload, Renuka has been advised to rest and will not be available for selection for the pink-ball Test. The BCCI medical team will closely monitor Renuka’s fitness.”
Kashvi Gautam’s inclusion comes after her participation in the ODI series against Australia. Notably, the Indian team suffered a heavy defeat against Australia in the third ODI held at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Sunday, losing by 185 runs. Chasing a target of 410 runs, India was bowled out for just 224 runs.
Australia’s captain, Alyssa Healy, delivered a stunning performance with 158 runs, while Alana King took four wickets for just 33 runs. The Indian batting lineup struggled significantly, having lost the first ODI by six wickets and the second by five wickets, leading to Australia clinching the ODI series 3-0.
However, the T20 series showcased a remarkable performance from Harmanpreet Kaur’s side, who won the three-match series 2-1. Smriti Mandhana was particularly impressive, scoring 129 runs at a strike rate of 134 across three matches. On the Australian side, Georgia Wareham also shone, accumulating 116 runs in three matches.
The Indian bowlers excelled during the T20 series, with Arundhati Reddy taking eight wickets in three matches and Shree Choudhary claiming five wickets. The Indian women’s team will conclude their tour with the Test match against Australia starting on March 6 at the Perth Stadium.
