Renuka Chowdhury Calls Womens Reservation Bill a Political Stunt

New Delhi, April 15: Senior Congress leader and MP Renuka Chowdhury has criticized the central government, labeling the Women’s Reservation Bill as a mere political stunt.

During a media interaction in New Delhi, Chowdhury stated that the bill represents an attempt to exploit women’s rights for political gain. “The government is trying to use us as a shield, believing that everyone is naive,” she remarked.

Chowdhury pointed out that the bill was introduced unexpectedly amid elections in five states, questioning how the Election Commission approved it.

She challenged the government, asking, “If there is such a love for women, why not introduce the reservation during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections? They were talking about the census then. Now, suddenly, they are bringing in the Women’s Reservation Bill overnight.”

The Congress MP asserted that the true implications of the bill would become clear during the special session of Parliament starting on April 16.

Chowdhury claimed that while the government is proposing a reservation bill for women, there has been no consultation with female MPs. “If there is such affection for women, why weren’t we called for discussions? The bill was circulated just yesterday afternoon,” she added.

Referencing Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, Chowdhury emphasized that the bill has been rushed through. “With elections happening in five states, women are busy campaigning. What was the urgency that led to an overnight special session?”

She accused the government of using the bill not to empower women but as a façade for delimitation. “Their intentions are questionable. Gas cylinder prices have tripled, and there are no solutions for children’s education and employment. They remain silent on national issues, yet suddenly show so much concern for women,” she concluded.
