Mumbai, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Regular classes have resumed at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay following several days of protests by student organizations in response to the suicide of second-year B.Tech student Sahil Wakode. As of Wednesday, the campus is free of demonstrations.
IIT Bombay hosts over 12,000 students and more than 700 faculty members, yet the atmosphere has returned to normal, with no protests occurring within the campus grounds. A small group of humanities students and members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) remain outside.
On Tuesday, the crime branch recorded statements from Sahil’s parents, indicating that further questioning will occur as they seek more information. Authorities revealed that Sahil owned an iPhone, which is currently locked. Technical assistance is being sought to unlock the device, as it may provide crucial information, including chat histories and other data that could clarify the circumstances surrounding his death.
Officials noted that IIT Bombay has an SC-ST cell and a Student Counseling Center, where students can report any issues they face. Police plan to inquire at these facilities to determine if Sahil had previously lodged any complaints or sought counseling.
Earlier this week, IIT Bombay refuted claims that Director Shirish B. Kedare resigned following the student’s suicide. The institution clarified via a post on social media platform X that the director has not stepped down, labeling the reports as false.
