New Delhi, April 24: The first phase of elections in West Bengal concluded on Thursday with a remarkable voter turnout exceeding 92%. The Supreme Court expressed satisfaction and joy regarding this turnout, viewing it as a positive sign for democracy. A large participation in voting strengthens the democratic tradition of the country.
During a hearing, Chief Justice remarked, “As a citizen of India, I am very pleased to see the voter turnout. When people cast their votes, democracy becomes stronger. When citizens understand the importance of their vote, they tend to stay away from violence.” Justice Bagchi also expressed contentment with the electoral process.
He noted that there were no reports of major violent incidents during the first phase, which is a positive indication. He mentioned that while wars occur among rulers, it is the common people who suffer.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta described the voting as historic. He stated that a turnout of over 92% reflects the public’s trust in democracy. Aside from a few isolated incidents, the elections were entirely peaceful, with central security forces performing admirably.
In the first phase of voting in West Bengal, a turnout of 91.78% was recorded, surpassing the previous record of 84.72% set in 2011. Women’s participation led the way at 92.69%, compared to 90.92% for male voters. This trend highlights a national movement towards increased electoral participation among women. The significance of this turnout is particularly noteworthy, as West Bengal has historically maintained a high voter turnout, often ranking among the highest in the country.
