Kolkata, May 21: Re-elections are taking place today in the Falta assembly constituency of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. All 285 polling booths in this area are conducting a fresh voting process.
Voting will occur from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with results expected to be announced on May 24.
The re-elections were ordered by the Election Commission of India (ECI) following numerous complaints of electoral fraud during the second phase of the assembly elections held on April 29. Allegations included reports of BJP candidates’ names and symbols being obscured with white tape on electronic voting machines (EVMs) at several polling booths.
In response to these issues, the ECI mandated a re-vote across the entire Falta assembly constituency.
Previously, Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan announced on Tuesday that he would not contest this time. He expressed his trust in the Chief Minister regarding a development package for Falta.
Sources from the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office reported on Wednesday that election personnel are fully prepared, and deployment is proceeding smoothly. Continuous monitoring has been established to ensure that every aspect of the voting process runs efficiently. These measures aim to facilitate a free, fair, and peaceful election. The re-elections will occur under the strict security of 35 companies of central armed police forces, a significant presence for a single assembly constituency.
However, the CEO’s office clarified that despite Khan’s announcement, his name will still appear as the Trinamool Congress candidate during the re-elections on the EVMs.
