New Delhi, December 8. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Monday addressed the Indigo crisis in the Rajya Sabha, stating that the government is taking the issue very seriously. An investigation is currently underway, and once conclusions are drawn, strict action will be taken to set an example for other airlines.
Responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Naidu explained that the situation arose due to internal operational issues within Indigo, including crew rostering and internal planning.
The Union Minister added that the government implemented Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules after consultations with all stakeholders. These rules were enforced in April, following directions from the High Court. Out of 22 FDTL rules, 15 came into effect from July 1, while the remaining seven were enforced from November 1.
Since then, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been in talks with all airlines regarding the FDTL rules. Indigo was also consulted on December 1, as they sought clarifications on the rules. However, during this interaction, Indigo did not mention any problems, and operations appeared normal.
Minister Naidu further stated that as soon as the issue surfaced on December 3, the ministry took immediate steps to regain control of the situation. Airport operations were brought under control, and consultations with all stakeholders were held. The situation improved significantly over the following two days, although passengers faced considerable difficulties.
He emphasized that safety remains the government’s top priority, and there will be no compromise on it under any circumstances. The security of crew, pilots, passengers, and the entire system is of utmost importance.
In conclusion, Ram Mohan Naidu reiterated that the government is treating this matter with great seriousness. After the investigation, stringent action will be taken to serve as a precedent for other airlines.
