Mumbai: The iconic film Ram Lakhan, directed and produced by Subhash Ghai, has completed 37 years since its release. Premiering on 27 January 1989, the movie remains a special favourite among audiences, especially for the memorable pairing of Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor.
In an interview, Subhash Ghai revealed that unlike his usual detailed approach to scripting, he wrote the entire script of Ram Lakhan in just 15 days while staying in Khandala. He explained that the film’s shoot had to begin quickly, so he chose actors who were available immediately rather than waiting for bigger stars.
Ram Lakhan is a family revenge drama centred on two brothers, Ram and Lakhan. Ram, played by Jackie Shroff, becomes an honest police officer, while Lakhan, portrayed by Anil Kapoor, is a mischievous and carefree youth. Their father’s murder at the hands of their uncle Vishambar, played by Amrish Puri, drives their mother Sharda (Rakhi) to push them towards avenging the crime. The film explores themes of good versus evil, brotherhood, and justice.
The film also features notable performances by Dimple Kapadia as Radha, Madhuri Dixit as Chandni, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik, and Gulshan Grover in key roles. The music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal became hugely popular, with songs like ‘My Name Is Lakhan’, ‘Bada Dukh Diya O Ramji’, and ‘Tera Naam Liya Tujhe Yaad Kiya’ still cherished today.
Ram Lakhan was the second highest-grossing film of 1989 and emerged as a blockbuster. It received nine nominations at the 35th Filmfare Awards, where Rakhi won Best Supporting Actress. Satish Kaushik and Anupam Kher also received awards for their performances.
