Chennai, February 18: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify, increasing the chances of rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the coming days.
According to the weather department, this system developed over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday and extends into the southwestern region of the Bay and the adjacent Indian Ocean. It is currently moving in a west-northwest direction, with expectations of further strengthening in the southwestern Bay of Bengal and nearby equatorial Indian Ocean areas.
As this system strengthens over the sea, dry weather is expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until Thursday. However, meteorologists have indicated signs of a weather change thereafter.
Moderate rainfall is anticipated in the coastal districts and southern interior parts of Tamil Nadu after Thursday. The weather department further predicts that several locations in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry may experience moderate rainfall on February 21, as the weather system will influence atmospheric conditions in the region.
Residents of coastal and southern districts are advised to stay updated with official bulletins regarding further developments.
Light fog is expected in northern Tamil Nadu during the early hours of Wednesday and Thursday, which may slightly affect visibility in some areas, especially around sunrise.
In Chennai, partly cloudy skies are likely during the day. The weather department has also forecasted light fog in a few areas during the early morning hours. The weather is expected to remain relatively stable throughout the day, with no significant rainfall anticipated immediately.
Officials are continuously monitoring the activity and intensity of the low-pressure system. Fishermen and coastal communities are urged to exercise caution and follow updates issued by the weather department. Further updates are expected as the system develops in the Bay of Bengal.
