Rain Alert: Rainfall Amid Severe Cold Disrupts Life Across Several States
New Delhi, January 16: Amid an ongoing cold wave across northern and central India, unexpected rainfall in several states has added to the woes of citizens. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a western disturbance forming over the Western Himalayan region is set to bring light to moderate rainfall to parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Vidarbha in Maharashtra over the next four days.

Meanwhile, southern India is also expected to experience intense rainfall and thunderstorms due to cyclonic wind patterns over Punjab and adjoining areas near Pakistan.
Maharashtra Sees Temperature Swings and Rain
In Maharashtra, the past two days have seen a significant drop in minimum temperatures, causing concern among farmers as fluctuating weather conditions impact crops. Morning fog and cool temperatures persisted across several regions.
In central Maharashtra, minimum temperatures have been recorded slightly above normal. In the Vidarbha region, clouds dominate the sky, with light rainfall expected in some areas over the next 24 hours. Farmers are on alert as changes in weather continue to affect agricultural planning.
Severe Cold Wave Grips North India
The cold wave remains relentless across northern India. In Ayodhya, dense fog has reduced visibility, disrupting daily activities. The national capital, Delhi, is also grappling with freezing temperatures, fog, and light rain, which have further intensified the cold.
Train Services Disrupted:
The cold and foggy conditions in Delhi have significantly disrupted train schedules. Several trains have been delayed for hours, with some even canceled, leaving passengers stranded and forcing many to alter their travel plans. Operations at New Delhi Railway Station have been hit hardest, causing immense inconvenience to travelers.
The IMD has issued a warning that the cold wave and dense fog conditions in Delhi are expected to persist over the coming days.
Rajasthan Experiences Rain and Drop in Temperature
In Rajasthan, light rainfall in the state capital, Jaipur, and surrounding areas has further reduced temperatures, intensifying the cold. On Wednesday, Jaipur recorded 5.2 mm of rainfall, while Bhilwara received 1.2 mm, as per the IMD.
- The maximum temperature in Jaipur fell to 15.8ยฐC, while the minimum was recorded at 10.3ยฐC.
- The IMD has also predicted light rainfall and hailstorms in parts of Rajasthan on Thursday.
School Closures in Jaipur:
With increasing cold, the Jaipur district administration has declared a holiday for students up to Class 8 on Thursday. School timings for higher classes have been adjusted to avoid early morning exposure to freezing conditions.
Nationwide Weather Forecast
The IMD has forecast more rainfall in northern and western regions due to the cyclonic wind patterns and western disturbance. Meanwhile, parts of southern India are bracing for heavy rains and possible thunderstorms, especially in coastal regions.
Impact on Agriculture and Travel
Farmers across affected regions, particularly in Maharashtra and Rajasthan, are concerned about the adverse effects of unseasonal rain on winter crops. In northern states, disruptions in travel and daily activities continue due to the persistent cold and foggy conditions.
Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions, especially while traveling, and to stay updated with the latest weather advisories.
