Chennai, May 10: Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and a senior Congress leader, will arrive in Chennai on May 10 to attend the swearing-in ceremony of C. Joseph Vijay as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. According to official sources, Gandhi is expected to land at Chennai airport around 8:40 AM.
In light of Gandhi’s visit and the high-profile political event, stringent security measures have been implemented at key locations throughout the city.
Vijay will take the oath of office at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai at 10 AM, with Governor Rajendra Arlekar administering the oath. The ceremony is anticipated to attract numerous senior national and regional political leaders, film personalities, and party workers.
Vijay’s party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Although TVK fell short of achieving an outright majority, Congress promptly extended its support to Vijay following the election results. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Indian Union Muslim League have also pledged unconditional support to the coalition led by Vijay.
With the backing of coalition partners and supporting parties, the TVK-led faction has secured the support of 120 legislators, comfortably surpassing the majority mark of 118 required to form a government in Tamil Nadu.
After receiving letters of support from coalition partners at the Raj Bhavan, Governor Arlekar formally invited Vijay to form the government. It is expected that Vijay will take the oath along with some members of his cabinet, while the full cabinet expansion may occur later.
Political experts regard Vijay’s rise as one of the most significant political developments in Tamil Nadu in recent years. The actor-turned-politician is set to begin his first term as Chief Minister amid heightened public and political interest across the state.
